Manuela & Daniel's Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Engagement
Okay, can we talk about the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for a second? Because taking photos there and walking through those ivy-covered stone gates sent me into a small, personal crisis about how beautiful it is.
Needless to say, Manuela and Daniel’s engagement shoot there did not disappoint.
She showed up in this dreamy lace midi dress — white, vintage-looking, tea-length — and he wore soft linen neutrals, and together they just fit the Wildflower Center like they were always supposed to be there…like the ivy grew around those stone arches with them specifically in mind.
We wandered. We explored. We found every tucked-away corner this place has to offer, and honestly? That's exactly the kind of session I live for.
The Wildflower Center, For the Uninitiated
If you haven't been, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is the Botanic Garden of Texas, sitting on 284 acres in southwest Austin. It was co-founded by Lady Bird Johnson herself in 1982 to protect and preserve North America's native plants, and the grounds are stunning.
Think centuries-old live oaks with branches that look choreographed, ivy-draped limestone ruins, winding elevated boardwalks over open meadow, and wildflower gardens that go absolutely feral with color in the warmer months. There's also this incredible ivy-covered stone tower that looks like it was lifted straight out of a fantasy film and dropped into southwest Austin, and I will never stop being obsessed with it.
For photos, it's unreal. You get dramatic stone architecture AND wild, lush, color-saturated outdoor scenes all in one place. The vibes range from "old European courtyard" to "running through a field in a coming-of-age film" within, like, 200 feet of each other. It's genuinely one of the most versatile engagement session locations in all of Austin, and the fact that it's also one of the most beautiful doesn't hurt.
About The Beautiful Couple
Manuela has this incredible energy that's just present in every frame. She's expressive and alive and the kind of person the camera has always been obsessed with. There's a moment early in the gallery where she's mid-laugh, pulling Daniel along by the hand, and it's one of those shots that just feels like a whole personality in a single frame. Daniel is steady and warm and always, always angled toward her. He’s the kind of partner who makes you feel like the most interesting person in the room without even trying.
You know those couples where you can just feel how much they genuinely like each other? That's them.
We hit all the spots — the iconic stone arch (obviously), the ivy-covered tower with the bright blue Texas sky behind it, the long elevated boardwalk with the rolling Hill Country views stretching out forever, the ivy tunnels and the passages between the limestone walls. And then we ended in the wildflower gardens, which were going OFF. Hot pink coneflowers, golden black-eyed Susans, little splashes of color everywhere. That's where we got what might be my favorite shot of the entire gallery. Manuela holding a coneflower bloom up to the camera, her engagement ring in frame, the tiniest heart tattoo on her finger making an appearance.
I audibly gasped. It was embarrassing. And yet, I regret nothing.
Want To Shoot At the Wildflower Center?
Here's what you need to know:
Admission: You'll need a general admission ticket or membership to access the grounds. Current hours and pricing are on the Wildflower Center's website. It’s worth checking before you book!
Photography fee: The Wildflower Center charges a separate photography fee on top of general admission — $100 Monday–Friday and $250 on weekends. This needs to be booked in advance, so reach out to them before we lock in a date!
Best timing: Late morning and mid-afternoon light plays beautifully off the limestone. If we can catch the late afternoon window, the open meadow areas get the most gorgeous golden glow.
What to wear: Soft neutrals, warm earth tones, anything with texture or lace. The grounds are doing a LOT of the color work, so you don't need to compete with them. Manuela's lace dress against those stone walls was genuinely perfect. Trust the vibe.
What to expect: We'll flow through a few different areas — the central courtyard and stone archways, the tower, the elevated boardwalk over the meadow, and the wildflower gardens. Every corner has a completely different feel, so your gallery will have real variety without ever feeling scattered.
Parking is off La Crosse Ave, and I always recommend arriving a few minutes early just to walk around and get comfortable before we start shooting. The grounds have a way of putting people at ease almost immediately, which, honestly, same.
If the Wildflower Center has been living rent-free in your head as an engagement session location (valid, very valid), or if you're looking for somewhere in Austin that feels a little unexpected and a little magical, let's chat.
I happen to know a few good spots.
