Romantic Bar Engagement at Thompson Hotel in San Antonio

When Jackie told me she wanted a romantic, moody hotel bar engagement vibe for her and Leroy’s engagement photos, I immediately started hunting for the perfect spot. After some location scouting and research, I landed on the Thompson Hotel and instantly knew it was the one.

This hotel is an absolute gem for couples looking for engagement photos that feel elevated, chic, and cinematic. With intentional design, rich textures, and rooftop views overlooking downtown San Antonio, the Thompson offers a setting that feels both intimate and iconic—cocktails in hand included.

As a San Antonio engagement photographer, I’m always looking for hotels and spaces that blend thoughtful design with culture and atmosphere. Thompson Hotel delivered all of that and more. Between the cozy bar spaces, ambient lighting, modern art, and city views, the location gave us serious editorial energy. Jackie and Leroy brought the glam—and we made magic.

Hop on the Non-Trendy Trend: Take Your Engagement Photos at a Hotel Bar

Hotel bar engagement sessions are one of my favorite non-trendy trends—and for good reason.

A hotel bar offers a controlled, stylish environment that’s perfect for flash photography, dark and moody images, and candid moments between guests (or just the two of you). You get multiple photo-ready spaces in one location: lounge seating, bar details, architectural design elements, and often rooftop views—all without bouncing all over San Antonio.

If you’re drawn to culture, atmosphere, and intentional design, a bar engagement session inside a thoughtfully designed hotel is such a strong option.

Why Thompson Hotel Is a Dreamy Backdrop

This hotel truly has it all: rich textures, striking art, rooftop skyline views, and a bar that looks like it belongs in a modern editorial spread. The Moon’s Daughters Bar created a romantic, elevated setting that felt both intimate and bold—perfect for engagement photos that tell a story.

What I love most about photographing at the Thompson is how every corner feels like its own vignette. From lush elevator alcoves to dramatic stairway lighting and thoughtfully designed guest spaces, we created so much variety without ever leaving the hotel. It’s one of my favorite ways to shoot—romantic, cinematic, and still warm and playful, just like Jackie and Leroy.

Planning notes: Thompson Hotel requires prior approval for professional photography, and location fees may apply depending on timing, space usage, and whether you’re a hotel guest. For Jackie and Leroy’s fall engagement session, we coordinated in advance to photograph during approved hours and in permitted areas. Policies, fees, and hours of operation can change, so confirming details ahead of time is key—or you can hire me and I’ll handle that planning for you.

Bringing Jackie’s Pinterest-Inspired Vision to Life

When Jackie first sent over her Pinterest board filled with romantic hotel bar engagement photos, I knew we were going to make something really special. I love working with couples who come in with a vision—it allows us to lean into design, mood, and intentional styling.

From the off-the-shoulder dress to champagne toasts and cozy bar seating, every detail reflected who they are: stylish, intimate, and effortlessly cool. Translating that inspiration into real-life photos—within a hotel space that matched their energy—was pure magic.

Planning a Hotel Bar Engagement? Here’s What You Should Know

These romantic, luxe bar engagement sessions are all the rage (for good reason), but come with some need-to-know details. If you’re dreaming of a similar look for your engagement session, keep in mind most hotels (including Thompson) do charge a location fee. For Jackie and Leroy’s session, the fee was $500. These rates can vary depending on the hotel and whether you're staying there, so it’s always worth checking ahead. I know Thompson Hotel does offer proposal packages if you reach out in advance. I always plan ahead and make sure we’re set up for a smooth, stress-free shoot (no awkward surprises or getting booted out).

I also recommend arriving a little before the usual busy times. We got there around opening time and pretty much had the bar to ourselves for their photos.

So if this kind of glam editorial vibe is calling your name, know it’s doable—but you just might need to budget and do a little planning ahead. (Or if you book with me, I’ll do all the planning so you can just show up and do your thang!)

Fave Moments From the Sesh

Some of my favorite moments from this session happened on the rooftop, where the downtown San Antonio skyline becomes part of the story. I also loved the quiet in-between moments: hands gently clasped at the bar, shared smiles over cocktails, and those subtle touches that say everything.

And yes—the elevator shots and art wall moments deserve a shoutout. Moody hotel lighting plus a couple in love? Instant cinematic energy.

“I truly loved working with Christy during my engagement shoot. She is kind, gives clear direction, and captures magic. She is the best in the business and I would highly recommend her for your upcoming special photos!”
— Jackie
